El Dorado rum 8 YO

Distillation:
The 8 Year Old El Dorado Rum is a blend of rums aged for a minimum of eight years.

This blend consists of rums produced on the Wooden Continuous Coffey Still – former Enmore Estate, Wooden Double Pot Still – former Port Mourant Estate, French Continuous Savalle Still – former Uitvlugt Estate and from rums produced on a Continuous Coffey Still.
The Wooden Continuous Coffey Still originates from the Enmore Sugar Factory, founded nearly 200 years ago by Edward Henry Porter. This Wooden Still is now located at the Diamond Distillery – home of the El Dorado Rums.
The rum mark made on the Wooden Continuous Coffey Still is referred to as “Enmore” or “EHP” this after Mr. Edward Henry Porter.
The wooden Double Pot Still was first located at the Port Mourant Estate. Founded in 1732 the Port Mourant Estate is reckoned as one of the oldest estates in the world.
The Port Mourant or PM rum was a very popular basis for the rums consumed by the British Royal Navy.
The Port Mourant still is now located at Demerara Distillers Diamond complex and is the only operational wooden double pot still in the world.
The Continuous Savalle Still originates from the former Uitvlugt Rum Distillery. This truly versatile still is now located at the Diamond Distillery and has the capability to produce nine different rum marks by using different operational settings. One of these marks is used in the blend of the 8 Year Old El Dorado Rum.

Ageing:
The rums are aged in oak barrels in Guyana (South-America) with its ideal climate for ageing.
At temperatures of 30 – 34 degrees Celsius the oxidation process is more rapid and creates delicate aromas.
Under these conditions, unwanted congeners are absorbed easily by the oak wood.
The loss of these congeners is called mellowing and this process continues for as long as the rum is in direct contact with wood.
Most of the rums are stored in used Bourbon barrels sometimes re-charred on the inside to help impart more of the character from the wood.

Tasting Notes:
Soft and faintly sweet mouth; with traces of oak and caramel. Distinctly smooth. Light to medium bodied with hints of tobacco mixed with caramel toffee. Faint aroma of dried stone fruits and flambee banana.

Bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume.
